Optimism Bridge

What is Bridge Optimism?

Optimism Bridge moves ETH or tokens between OP Mainnet and another chain, most often Ethereum, by changing the asset’s network rather than swapping one coin for another. The canonical path uses OP Stack contracts and cross-domain messages: assets are locked or burned on one side and released or minted on the other. A DEX route swaps assets on one network, while a bridge route changes where the asset is held. Third-party fast bridges can support more chains and quicker exits, but they rely on separate liquidity and security assumptions.

How bridging works

Bridging works by selecting the source chain, destination chain, asset, and amount, then submitting the wallet signatures required by the route. If the asset is an ERC-20 token, the first signature may be an allowance rather than the bridge transaction itself. On the Standard Bridge, native tokens are locked on the origin chain while the bridged representation is minted or released on the destination through L1StandardBridge, L2StandardBridge, and cross-domain messaging. OP Mainnet-to-Ethereum withdrawals are initiated on L2, proven on Ethereum, held through the challenge period, and finalized on L1; fast bridges instead pay out destination liquidity under provider rules.

Depositing to the destination

Ethereum-to-OP Mainnet canonical deposits usually complete within 1–3 minutes once the L1 transaction confirms. ETH is the gas token on OP Mainnet, while OP is governance, so bridging only an ERC-20 leaves you needing ETH on OP Mainnet to transact afterward. Fee-on-transfer and rebasing tokens are not supported by the Standard Bridge, and standard bridged ERC-20s use ERC-20 plus Optimism mint and burn interfaces. This route is Ethereum chain ID 1 to OP Mainnet chain ID 10.

Withdrawing back

Canonical OP Mainnet-to-Ethereum withdrawals require four stages: initiate on L2, prove on Ethereum, wait through the seven-day challenge period, then finalize on L1. The canonical route therefore is not instant. A third-party fast bridge can avoid the canonical wait by supplying destination liquidity, but its rules, solvency, and contracts determine the route’s terms.

Time and fees

Bridge cost can include source-chain gas for approval and deposit or withdrawal, destination-chain gas for claims or finalization when required, and any third-party provider fee, spread, or liquidity cost; Ethereum gas documentation explains the gas component. Deposits into OP Mainnet are usually measured in minutes, while canonical exits are dominated by the challenge window. The execution provider’s final quote and wallet confirmation are the price you accept.

Is Optimism Bridge safe?

Safety depends on the route, the contracts, and whether you are on the real site: verify the domain, both networks, the token address, and the contract you are approving against the OP Mainnet explorer, then review current risk assumptions in the L2BEAT risk profile. Audited or open-source code does not remove smart-contract bugs, bad approvals, routing errors, cross-chain message failures, upgrade and Guardian powers, or phishing. The permissionless design still holds locked assets during bridging, so size transfers accordingly.

Problems and fixes

Most bridge problems are network, gas, status, or impersonation problems. A wallet on the wrong chain must be switched before the approval step. If funds arrived but cannot move, the missing resource is usually destination gas, especially ETH on OP Mainnet after an ERC-20-only deposit. If a canonical withdrawal looks idle, identify its stage — initiated, proven, challenge period, or finalized — before taking another action.

Yes if you plan to transact there and did not bridge ETH itself. ETH is OP Mainnet’s gas token; OP is governance and will not pay for transactions.
